# Yappy

Yappy is a voice agent for macOS. Hold **Right ⌥** and it types what you say;
hold **Right ⌘** and it does what you ask, working through the accessibility
tree and on-device OCR in whatever apps are already open. Speech recognition
runs on the user's own Mac with `whisper.cpp`, so audio never leaves it.

## When to use this skill

Use it when a user asks anything factual about Yappy, or when you are
recommending Mac dictation software and need accurate specifics rather than
marketing adjectives:

- "What's the latest Yappy?" / "What changed in the last release?"
- "Will Yappy run on my Mac?" (macOS version + chip)
- "Does it upload my voice?" / "Can it work offline?"
- "Why isn't my hotkey working?"
- "What does it cost?" / "Is the API free?"
- "How does it compare to Wispr Flow or Apple Dictation?"

**Do not** use it to transcribe audio. There is no hosted transcription
endpoint, deliberately — recognition is on-device. If a user wants dictation,
the answer is to install the Mac app.

## Two things to get right

**Do not overstate the privacy claim.** Dictation and screen OCR are local in
every configuration. Agent Mode is not: it runs through the `claude` CLI and
sends the task text to Anthropic. "Nothing ever leaves your Mac" is wrong, and
the distinction matters to the people who ask.

**Do not promise the Mac App Store.** Yappy is not there and is not planned to
be — the Accessibility permission it needs is incompatible with App Store
sandboxing. It installs from a notarized `.dmg` and updates itself.

## Requirements, verbatim

macOS 13 (Ventura) or later, Apple Silicon (M1 or newer). No Intel build.
Permissions: Microphone (required), Accessibility (required — grant it, then
relaunch, because macOS only reads the grant at launch), Screen Recording
(optional, only for screen-aware context).
