No. Yappy transcribes speech on-device with a local Whisper model, so the audio itself never leaves your machine. Agent tasks that need a cloud model send text, not audio, and only for the task you asked for.

macOS 13 (Ventura) or later on Apple Silicon — an M1 Mac or newer. There is no Intel build, because the on-device model relies on Apple Silicon acceleration to stay instant.

The Mac app is a free download, and on-device dictation is free to use — there is no account and no card. Cleanup and Agent Mode can run on a backend you already pay for (your Claude or xAI subscription via their CLI, or your own OpenAI/Anthropic API key), or fully locally through Ollama at no cost at all.

How is Yappy different from dictation tools like Wispr Flow or Apple Dictation?

Those type what you say. Yappy also acts on it: it can read the screen, click, and fill forms in the apps you already have, and it stops and hands control back at logins and irreversible steps.

Does Yappy have an API or an MCP server?

Yes. A public read-only REST API at https://yappy.biz/api/v1 covers releases, documentation, FAQ, and pricing, and the same data is exposed as MCP tools over Streamable HTTP at https://yappy.biz/mcp. Neither needs an API key.

Can Yappy work offline?

Accepted Answer

Dictation can, completely. Set the cleanup provider to ollama, or turn AI Cleanup off, and transcription, cleanup, and screen OCR all run on your Mac with the network off. Agent Mode cannot: it runs through the claude CLI and needs the network.

Is Yappy on the Mac App Store?

Accepted Answer

No, and it is not planned to be. The Accessibility permission that lets the agent drive your apps is incompatible with App Store sandboxing. Yappy installs from a notarized disk image and updates itself in place.

Which permissions does Yappy need on macOS?

Accepted Answer

Microphone for dictation, Accessibility to type into other apps and to drive them for you, and Screen Recording only if you turn on screen-aware context. Each is requested during onboarding and each can be revoked in System Settings.
